Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary
Northern Escape Mountain Lodge is located in the Skeena Mountains in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. Our grizzly bear tours allow guests to see these majestic animals in their natural habitat. The world-renowned Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary is only a short trip away from our lodge. The Khutzeymateen, located north of Prince Rupert, is home to one of the highest concentrations of grizzly bears in Canada. The park consists of over 44,000 hectares of preserved natural habitat, and is essential for protecting the grizzly bear species in North America. Bring your camera and spend a day taking awe-inspiring photos of these powerful apex predators. Kick off your bear viewing tour in style with a scenic helicopter ride to the coastal hamlet of Prince Rupert, enjoying breathtaking mountains along the way. Our team will then pick you up by boat and your grizzly adventure will begin!
Coastal Estuaries
Coastal estuaries are great places to see grizzly bears in action. They are also scenic places with diverse wildlife, so you will most likely be taking pictures way before you spot a bear. As the weather in Northern BC warms up in early August, grizzlies start to seek out food sources, such as spawning salmon, berry patches or their favourite high-protein plant, the “Lyngby Sedge”, to conserve energy for the long cold Canadian winter. Embark on a guided tour with our team using a jet boat to view grizzlies catching wild salmon or feeding on fields of sedge. Watch this picturesque scene from the safety of our jet boat and feel truly connected to nature.
You can explore the North on the water or in the air; both ways have their own unique charm. If you’d like to spend the whole day bear viewing, you can take a guided tour to the northern town of Kitimat and enjoy picturesque nature along the way. Our team will be waiting for you with a jet boat and take you on a two-hour boat ride to the remote area of Kemano to view bears in their natural habitat. Alternatively, explore the Dala-Kildala River using our solar inflatable jet boat to explore the channels in search of bears. The ultimate way to explore the North is in the air with your own custom guided helicopter tour. Fly directly from the lodge to prime bear viewing areas and be met by our bear guides who will handle everything for you.
At Northern Escape Mountain Lodge you are in the centre of wilderness and one of the best places for bear viewing in Canada.
