The Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary offers incredible opportunities to view grizzly bears in their natural habitat. Situated in the Great Bear Rainforest, the Khutzeymateen is Canada’s first Grizzly Bear sanctuary and is home to one of the highest concentrations of grizzly bears in the country. Grizzly and black bears can also be seen in many of the rivers and estuaries outside the sanctuary and even near the lodge. This area is also home to the elusive kermode, or spirit bear.
A short jaunt to the coast allows guests to go whale watching for humpbacks and orcas. Prince Rupert is one of North America’s most reliable locations to see them. You may spot grey whales feeding in kelp beds, or white-sided dolphins and porpoises playfully gliding alongside the boat. Steller sea lions are common on the rocky islets and bald eagles perch on cedars along the shoreline.

Jet boat up wild and rugged glacier-fed rivers under rugged peaks and cascading waterfalls. Enjoy a walk to a waterfall plunge pool or a relaxing soak in a natural hot spring. Wildlife can be around any bend in the river. When you spot bears or eagles on the shore, we’ll use the current to silently drift in close for perfect photos. Enjoy a campfire lunch on a remote gravel bar and make a plaster cast of a bear or wolf footprint as a keepsake. There are many options for jet boating on the Skeena River and its tributaries around the Lodge or going further up the inlets on the Pacific coast.
Northern Escape Mountain Lodge is a carbon neutral company. Synergy Enterprises, a leading carbon accounting firm, measured our 2020 greenhouse gas emissions; we then offset our footprint with Offsetters, Canada’s leading full service carbon management solutions provider. Their carbon offset projects are verified and validated by third parties to ensure that the emission reductions are real, additional and permanent. The project that we are supporting is the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project. Along with the climate benefits it provides, it supports the First Nations communities of the Great Bear Rainforest. We’re proud to do business while taking positive action on climate change.
The safety of our Staff, our Guests and the Communities we operate in are paramount to us at Northern Escape Heli Skiing. Our operations follow the most current guidance from BC, Canada and World Health Organizations for best practices, physical safety and mental well being while making every effort to provide the customer service and experience one would expect from a world class heli skiing resort. To this end, we are proud to announce that our Covid-19 Health and Safety precautions have met the highest standards as required for the “Safe Travel” designation from the World Travel and Tourism Council.
